Murals

Consider a Mural

A mural is a picture or design which is painted directly onto a wall. Unlike a traditional painting, a mural becomes part of the space. Murals can add charm to a room by incorporating existing architectural elements, colors, and decor. They can add drama and intrigue. For example, can you imagine how a small room could seem to expand when a window or French door leading to a country garden is painted on the wall? Suddenly we hear birds chirping and smell roses when we walk into the room! Or visualize an elegant dining area with hand painted columns and elaborate scroll border around the top. Murals can transcend time and space and can fulfill a decorating dream from the drama of a full scale scene to the simplicity of a branch of apple blossom!

Has your child fantasized about his or her dream room? Perhaps your child is an avid sports fan? What about having a football field painted right on the floor and goal posts on one wall, and cheering fans on another? Would your child like to visit the jungle? Then why not cover the walls with playful monkeys, lions, tigers, alligators, and exotic birds? A mural can be a delightful addition to any child’s or teenager’s dream room.

Murals may be incorporated with many existing or new architectural and decorative elements and features. Walls can highlight and accent a mural when techniques such as rag-rolling, tone on tone sponging, striping, or a steried finish are applied. Many faux finishes can also be incorporated. Some of these include marbling and wood graining. An example of where one may use wood graining would be an old, heavily painted staircase, or a door. A place one may want to use marbling may be a floor or a fireplace. An old painted floor can also be “turned to stone”. All of these finishes can be used alone or in perfect harmony with your mural.

Tromp L'oeil

Trompe l'oeil is a special type of mural designed to fool the eye. Examples of this would be decorative plates hanging on a wall which seem to be there but really are painted. Another example is paper ribbons which, at a glance, seem to hold pictures on the wall. Many, many, items can be added in Trompe l'oeil style. Ever wish you had a set of antique china? Why not display it on a “shelf” in the kitchen or dining rooms?

Murals for Businesses

Murals are also an economical and artistic choice for businesses new and old. A small cafe becomes a French Bistro of Paris with an impressionistic side walk cafe scene on one wall. An historical building recalls days gone past and records important historical events and places. Libraries look enduring with enchanted gardens, woodland elves, or children of the walls reading in quiet corners.

The Mural Process

Murals are done with careful preparation for lasting quality. A consultation with the client will be done to determine the needs and desired effect. The walls will be prepared through priming in the perimeter of the mural space. Other effects such as faux finishes and special textures may be added at this time if desired by the client. The murals are done in high quality acrylic or latex based paints in most cases, and sealed with matt or semi gloss polyurethane for easy cleaning. Jobs may range in duration from a few hours to several; months depending on the complicity of the job.
